Aus Hohen und Tiefen

Darryn Schneider's Family History

Most of my ancestors came from Germany in a period of migration from this region between 1860 and 1880. Many of these people settled in the farming regions of what was called the Rosewood Scrub and the Fassifern Valley (and in between). The surnames of these early settlers are DAU, LOBEGEIGER, MOLLER, PRENZLER, RAABE, SCHNEIDER, WINDOLF, WOLTER, and ZILLMER. I also have a few English ancestors whose surnames are BALLARD, and RYMAN. This web site should be of interest to people who are directly connected to my family, and also to people with family backgrounds similar to this.

Genealogy

As well as a place to share the information I've collected about my family, I'll include details about the resources and techniques I've used. The emphasis will be on tracing family with a German ancestry in South East Queensland, and the local history of this region. I wasted a lot of time for at least 6 months because I didn't organize my research. I highly recommend people organize their paper records from day 1. I tried a number of different ways which were basically alphabetical filing. These worked very poorly. The system I've ended up using, which I think does a great job, is well described at Genealogy Research Associates. I was also confused by what software to use. For this I wrote a summary page of the systems I recommend, which can be reached below. I will add notes as I learn and discover new things.

Historic photos from my family, and others in some way connected to Germans in SE Queensland. Also links to sources of topical photos.

I choose the title of "Aus Hohen und Tiefen" for the banner of my Family History web page as I feel it sums up our lives, which becomes clear to those who studying many generations of their ancestors.
