Hermann WINDOLF 1846-1922
Hermann WINDOLF is my Great Great Grandfather. He was born in the town of Grunenplan, Germany. As a young man he studied under the leader of the Baptist movement in Europe, J.C. Onken. He spent a decade preaching in his own country before emigrating to spread the word of God in the young country of Australia in 1877.
Hermann was a prolific writer all his life. After arriving in Australia he wrote back to the religious periodical "Der Pilger" giving a graphic description of the voyage to Australia and life in the new country. During his life he wrote many collections of religious verse of which one was titled "Aus Hohen und Tiefen" (From Heights and Depths). He also wrote extensively in the local Queensland News Budget, Deutsche Beilage.
His life has been well studied by Glen Roberts, who also translated a significant amount of his work. A number of his articles about Hermann have been published including in the Queensland Baptist Forum.
I choose the title of "Aus Hohen und Tiefen" for the banner of my Family History web page as I feel it sums up our lives, which becomes clear to those who studying many generations of their ancestors.
